Shroom Room
Lyttelton’s very own Shroom Room is a vegetarian and vegan cafe that opens on to Albion Square, with plenty of outdoor seating, amazing coffee, a wide selection of raw and vegan cakes and cookies, as well as some of the best hash browns and, of course, mushrooms, in all of New Zealand!
Even dedicated meat eaters won’t struggle to find something on the extensive menu (served until 3pm daily). Daily soups, salads, sandwiches and specials round out a long list of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free breakfast and lunch options.
The list of smoothies and milkshakes is long and creative, as are the chocolate-inspired thick shakes.
The breakfast menu includes items like the Gangsta Breakfast - housemade walnut and parmesan sausage, grilled tomato, 'shrooms, hash, poached eggs, wholegrain toast and a good dousing of hollandaise sauce. The Bless Up Breakfast comes with chunky (almost Spanish-style) chips, homemade smoked beans, grilled tomato, 'shrooms, toast, salsa and avocado.
There is a cosy indoor seating area and sheltered dining outside.
Like Lyttelton, the Shroom Room doesn't take itself too seriously and the relaxed atmosphere and quirky touches mirror that attitude.
