Paul Barrett of Sustainability by Design is an Industrial Chemist with over 25 years’ experience in delivering Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental projects to businesses and organisations, having held Senior Management roles in industry focusing on Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Management.

Specialising in high-risk industries, integrated management systems, change management and developing strong improvement culture within organisations, he has been involved as a path finder for new systems and training development at a National level in Air quality, Resource efficiency, and Carbon, Energy and Environmental Management.

Paul holds a Professional Master’s Degree in Environmental Management, a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Environmental Technology and a New Zealand Certificate in Science (Chemistry) as well as completing formal training in auditing.

An honour was to win three environmental awards for the Chemical Industry for Resource Efficiency programmes he helped to develop. He has spent time as a lecturer at CPIT (ARA) in the field of Resource Efficiency and was involved in a working group to develop these qualifications to the NZQA framework.

Sustainability by Design is a member of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ), The New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) and WasteMINZ.

Paul is currently the convener of the ISO TC 207 Review Group providing New Zealand Input into the review of ISO 14001 and its associated standards and guidance materials.

In his spare time you can find Paul playing music and planting out his house in Lyttelton with eco-sourced native plants.
